Moonlighting Adds Some Modern Flare To A Historic Plantation

Matt Carli - Friday, September 25, 2015

Moonlighting recently had the pleasure of being introduced to another new property. This particular property is a unique one. One that is located beyond the historic district of our home base in Charleston. It's a private plantation located in Ridgeland, South Carolina (between Beaufort and Hilton Head.) Upon entry to this 18,000 acre plantation, your eyes are bestowed upon some of the most naturally beautiful live oak trees that any scene in the south can offer. Off in the distance are retired silo's that once fed a vibrant herd of working cattle and acres upon acres of natural lowcountry beauty.

Moonlighting was introduced to this project initially and tasked with creating a design that would highlight a new feature that was being constructed at the "lake house." The lake house is separate residence on the plantation that will house both guests of the plantation while also playing host to private events and parties. The new feature was a custom-built deck and screened-in porch. The screened-in porch offered some great opportunities through illumination and we constructed a plan that would offer flexibility, circulation and overall a great aesthetic look.

During the construction of the screened-in porch and deck, we had the opportunity of planning with the builder and the electrician to allow for switches that would control each portion of the lighting plan. Within this design, there are three separate zones. One switch to control the up/down lighting on the exterior columns along with LED lights installed on the risers of the steps (not pictured), one switch to control the down lighting on the interior columns, and another switch that would control lights that were installed on the nearby dock (not pictured.)

Below are some photos of the final results as well as examples of how the lighting was zoned and the different settings/moods that can be achieved.

At Moonlighting we embrace the opportunities to create a custom lighting designs and we hope this project is a representation of how we can make that happen. We appreciate the opportunity that was given to us for this project and look forward to creating a custom lighting design for you!
