Outdoor String Lights: A Popular Outdoor Living Trend

Outdoor string lights have quickly become one of the hottest trends in outdoor living in the last couple years. Over the years, Moonlighting has become very familiar with creating custom string light designs for specific outdoor spaces. Every space requires a thoughtful, custom design because no outdoor living space is the same as the next. Just in the last two years, we've created custom designs for many notable Charleston hot-spots including 492, The Baystreet Biergarten, The Old Village Post House, Hutson Alley and several other private residences in Charleston.

When we first met with our newest client, we spent time in the space, discussing how it was utilized and how it could be better utilized. She often hosts dinner party's and wanted to create a romantic, entertaining atmosphere that would set a special tone for her and her guests. We knew exactly which direction we wanted to take this design! 


With this particular design, we utilized low voltage LED string lights. A somewhat new addition to outdoor string lighting world. There are several varieties of sting lights/bulbs that all provide different effects and intensities. Whether you're using a decorative Edison bulb or a low voltage LED bulb, it's important to understand the space so that the string lights don't overpower the space and more-so compliment it instead. Low voltage string lights allow for a great deal of flexibility and far-less electrical requirements. The lamps are a 1-watt, warm white, LED lamp that mimic the warm and inviting tone that we were looking to achieve. The LED lamps operate using a very minimal amount energy while still producing an appropriate amount of light. The string lights are hung and supported by a small galvanized wire and anchored in place by the house as well as several custom built poles that are permanently mounted to withstand the elements. 

This courtyard was transformed with the addition of these string lights. We also added several accent lights within to help blend and create depth as well as achieve different light levels and overall functionality. Here's just a little bit of what our newest client had to say about the project.

Moonlighting amplified my idea, finished the project well before a deadline, and was cognizant of my budget (even providing me with multiple scenarios from which I could choose the best fit.) All of the men who worked on my home were trustworthy, polite, and respectful. The care and attention they took to execute this project blew me away."
